Calibrating the External potentiometerThere are two methods of calibrating the External pot. The examples given assume an automotive application but are easily adapted to other applications. The first method is simple and quick and requires only a voltmeter and no knowledge of the vehicle being tested. The second method is more accurate but requires vehicle knowledge, a voltmeter, and a signal/function generator. Method 1Connect a voltmeter to the output. Have an assistant take the car to a predetermined speed. Using the external potentiometer on the FV6, set the output to a specific voltage and lock the potentiometer. The gain is given by: Gain = Speed / Voltage. For example if the speed was 50 MPH and the voltage was 2.5 volts, then Gain = 50 MPH / 2.5 volts = 20 MPH/volt Method 2Assume that you want the output of the FV6 to be 20 MPH/volt. If the speed signal from the vehicle is 18,000 pulses/mile, the calculations are: 18,000 pulses/mile = 18,000 pulses/hour / MPH = 360,000 pulses/hour / volt = 100 Hz (pulses/second) / volt. Once you have this number, feed a 300 Hz (to calibrate at mid-scale) signal into the FV6 using a signal/function generator. Using a voltmeter to monitor the output, adjust the FV6 external potentiometer until the output reads 3.000 volts and lock the potentiometer. Calibration is complete. |
