The FV6 is shipped with each channel set to the External potentiometer mode. In this mode, the output of the channel can be adjusted from approximately 80Hz / volt to 250 Hz / volt. The other three modes are fixed as follows:

Operating Mode Output
8 cylinder mode    66.67 Hz / volt
6 cylinder mode    50.00 Hz / volt
4 cylinder mode    33.33 Hz / volt

These calibrations yield the constant of 1000 RPM / volt as shown by the calculations below:

1000 Revolutions per Minute = 16.67 Revolutions per Second = 8.33 Engine Cycles per Second =

  • 66.67 Sparks per Second @ 8 Sparks per Engine Cycle.
  • 50.00 Sparks per Second @ 6 Sparks per Engine Cycle.
  • 33.33 Sparks per Second @ 4 Sparks per Engine Cycle.

It is not a requirement that the operating mode match the number of cylinders in the vehicle being tested. That is only required to achieve the constant 1000 RPM / volt. For a number of reasons, a different constant may be desired. For example, a higher constant is required to monitor speeds higher than 6000 RPM. Below is a table listing the RPM / volt constant for a variety of engine cylinder / operating mode combinations.

8 cylinder mode    6 cylinder mode    4 cylinder mode
12 cylinders    667    500    333
10 cylinders    800    600    400
8 cylinders    1000    750    500
6 cylinders    1333    1000    667
4 cylinders    2000    1500    1000
3 cylinders    2667    2000    1333
1 cylinder*    8000    6000    4000

*Any number of cylinders where the pickup is on only one cylinder.
